About Me

I have been involved in fitness and Martial Arts the majority of my life. In High School I lettered in football, basketball and tennis, and then continued to play tennis for a small university my first 2 years in college. When I transferred to a larger university I started practicing Goju-Shorin karate and GAMA-Goju karate (senior green belt in both).

After I was out of college I started practicing Hombu style Aikido and Aiki-jujutsu style Aikido, where I achieved the rank of Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) and eventually started teaching for my senior instructor when he had a serious shoulder injury. After a small break, I then studied Tae Kwon Do (senior blue belt) and then a few years later studied Sanshinkai Karate (Karate International; 2nd Degree Brown belt). I now study Jo Kwon Chi, a mixed art that combines Shotokan karate and traditional Tae Kwon Do (with some Turkish and Chinese influences), focusing on the self-defense aspects of these arts (probationary/visiting black belt)…..I am scheduled to test for my full black belt once the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted).

During each of the breaks between the arts listed above I always kept active with aerobic exercise (like zumba and aerobics classes), and I still strive to maximize my performance by supplementing my martial arts with alternate types of fitness. I am currently also a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Weight Loss Instructor, and I have a passion for personal improvement and becoming the ultimate person you can be.

Why I Love Martial Arts and Fitness

One of my requirements for my current black belt test is that I compose a narrative of what martial arts means to me….. Almost always when a person starts martial arts, they have a specific reason (they want to be stronger, they’re’e tired of being physically bullied, they want more confidence, they want a really good full-body workout, etc.), but for the lifetime martial artist (or even long-term martial artist) martial arts becomes so much more. Through the long term dedication and discipline, it becomes who you are, how you think, how you deal with confrontation, and in general, how you resolve every issue and challenge. Martial arts (and also fitness) can give you a sense of well-being, confidence, and achievement that is difficult to find anywhere else……it’s an accomplishment you carry with you everywhere you go, and something you have with you 24hrs a day. Martial arts is about the love and dedication of protecting and preserving those you love (including yourself) and what you hold dear. It’s about sacrifice, commitment and devotion to excellence in everything you do.

Physical fitness shows in everything about you every second of every day, whether it comes through martial arts or some other form, everything you do becomes easier (and better) if you are in your best physical form. It’s easier to move, less effort to do everyday activities, and you have more energy.

My Goal for This Site

I created this website as a forum to discuss different martial arts, to share videos, to contain blogs related to martial arts and fitness, and to offer both some good deals for martial arts uniforms and equipment, as well as health and fitness products that have a proven track record of excellence. From time to time I will offer some books/reading material (when I am able to find some that is worthy of my readers), and I would love to discuss your individual experiences in other martial arts, or your experiences in your current martial art.
